Anxious Parents, Sicker Kids

Published: 3/27/2008

Once more levels of parental stress have been linked with the health of their children. A recent three-year study from University of Rochester compared measures of the psychological health of parents over a three-year period with illness diaries and markers of immune function in their children. When parents tested highest for anxiety or depression, their kids were sick more often. The children of the most stressed parents showed the highest levels of immune activity, meaning their bodies were working hardest to try to ward off infection.

What’s the take-home? Pediatricians and savvy parents who recognize the power of family dynamics are not surprised by the results of this study, which builds on previous research. I’ve observed in my own office that kids who seem stressed there usually have parents who are anxious as well.

How we as parents cope with the stresses in our lives has now been clearly shown to have direct short-term effects on the health of our children, and possibly long-term effects as well. Now’s a good time to decide to learn and practice whatever stress-management technique works for you, whether it be meditation, breathwork, exercise, an absorbing hobby, a pet, or just plain fun in any form.
